The questions for couples game

You know each other's coffee order and the face before a sneeze. And still, most nights the conversation is about who's picking up what. You haven't run out of things to say. You've just stopped asking.

Question 1 of 12

What's the most useless talent you have?

Demonstrations strongly encouraged.

Pass the phone each turn. Whoever has it reads the question out and you both answer.

This is a free questions for couples game you can play right now: 48 question cards in four rounds that get gradually closer, from silly warm-ups to flirty ones. Take turns asking, both answer and follow whatever turns up. A round takes about 15 minutes and there are no wrong answers.

Free to play. No signup, no email, nothing to install. Just a phone between the two of you.

How to play

  1. Take turns asking

Whoever has the phone reads the question out. You both answer, then pass it over. Go in order through the rounds or jump straight to the one that fits the night.

  2. Follow the good ones

If a question opens something up, stay there. The game is only an excuse to talk, so it's a win if you never finish a round.

  3. Skip without explaining

Either of you can pass on any card with no reason given. A laugh and a skip still got you talking, and it keeps the next question easy to ask.

Round 1: Warm up

Easy, silly and quick. These get you both talking before anything gets close.

  1. What's the most useless talent you have?

    Demonstrations strongly encouraged.

  2. Which of my habits did you find weird at first and secretly like now?

    Be kind. Be specific.

  3. If we had to enter a talent show as a duo, what would our act be?

Agree on a stage name while you're at it.

  4. What's a food you pretend to like for my sake?

Amnesty applies. Nobody gets in trouble.

  5. Which fictional couple are we most like?

Then pick the one you'd rather be like.

  6. What would your walk-on song be if you had one?

Hum it. The other one has to guess.

  7. What's the pettiest thing you've ever held a grudge about?

Bonus points if it's still going.

  8. If you could swap lives with me for a day, what's the first thing you'd do?

And what would you be relieved to hand back?

  9. What's your most controversial opinion about something tiny?

    Toilet roll direction counts.

  10. Which of my friends would you trust to plan our holiday?

And which one would you never let near it?

  11. What did you think I did for fun before you really knew me?

    How close was it?

  12. What's something you were weirdly proud of as a kid?

    The weirder, the better.

Round 2: Get to know me now

You know the old answers. People change quietly, so these are about who you each are this year.

  1. What has been taking up most of your head space lately?

Not the to-do list. The thing underneath it.

  2. What's something you've changed your mind about since we met?

    Big or small. Both count.

  3. When did you last feel really proud of yourself?

Let the other one be proud of you too.

  4. What's a small thing I do that makes your day better?

Say it now so it keeps happening.

  5. What do you wish people asked you about more?

Then that person can be me, starting now.

  6. What's something you're quietly worried about?

    No fixing. Just listening.

  7. What part of your week do you look forward to most?

Is it the same answer it would have been a year ago?

  8. What's a song that takes you straight back to a moment with me?

Put it on if you can.

  9. What do you think I misunderstand about you?

Gently. This one's a gift, not a complaint.

  10. When do you feel most like yourself these days?

How could you get a bit more of that?

  11. What's a compliment you've never forgotten?

From anyone. Then I get to try to top it.

  12. What's something new you'd like to learn, just for fun?

Could we learn it together, or is it yours alone?

Round 3: Us

About the two of you: the moments you remember differently and the ones still ahead.

  1. When did you first think, oh, this is serious?

See if you both land on the same moment.

  2. What's your favourite photo of us, and why that one?

Find it and look at it together.

  3. What's a tradition we have that you'd never give up?

And one you'd happily quietly retire.

  4. What's the best decision we ever made together?

    Do you agree on it?

  5. What's one thing we used to do that you'd love to bring back?

Could you pick a date for it before the night is out?

  6. When do you feel most like a team?

Then think of one more place it could happen.

  7. What's a trip we haven't taken yet that you daydream about?

    Dream first. Budget later.

  8. What do you think other people get wrong about us?

Are you secretly pleased about it?

  9. What's something I taught you without meaning to?

    And something you taught me.

  10. What's a hard time we got through that you're proud of?

Not to relive it. Just to give it its due.

  11. If we wrote a rule book for our relationship, what's rule number one?

Is it already true, or one to work towards?

  12. What would you love us to be like in five years?

Say it out loud and it starts to feel possible.

Round 4: A little flirty

The warmest round. Answer as much or as little as you like, and a laugh-and-skip counts as playing.

  1. What did you notice first about me?

The real answer, not the polite one.

  2. When do you think I look my best?

    It's rarely when you'd guess.

  3. What's the most attractive thing I do without realising it?

Now I know. Expect to see more of it.

  4. What was going through your head on our first kiss?

Compare notes. Somebody remembers it wrong.

  5. What's a date we've been on that you still think about?

    What made it work?

  6. Where would you take me if we had a whole night and no plans?

Dream a bit. The other one only has to say yes or maybe.

  7. What's something I said once that you've never forgotten?

    Good or cheeky, both welcome.

  8. What outfit of mine should I wear more often?

    Consider it noted.

  9. What's a small thing that always puts you in the mood to be close?

Small and specific beats big and vague.

  10. What's one thing you'd like us to try that we've never done?

Anywhere on the scale, from a dance class up. Maybe is a fine answer.

  11. What's your favourite way for me to say I want you?

A look, a word, a hand on your back. Pick one.

  12. What's one answer from tonight you want to remember?

Pick one of mine, then I'll pick one of yours. What happens next is up to both of you.
